| We worry about species becoming extinct, and cut off irrigation water to farmers so the fish may have it, we stop housing developments that would reduce the habitat of rare lizards and rodents. At the same time we dictate to our utilities that wind energy and solar power provide 10% of our electricity. To some, these both seem acts of nature lovers yet they are utterly different. The endangered species is left alone so it may survive, the habitat is protected but the wind generators and solar power plants are invasive spread species beyond their natural habitats. They are subsidized so they may exist. Like Wetlands drained to plant corn, subsidies leave the solar landscape short of native devices such as clotheslines, daylighting, bicyclist and walkers. The state plants Shell Solar, BP Solar and GE wind generators with masses of fertilizer subsidy. The victims of the renewable portfolio standards at first have no more idea of what is going on than rabbits run over on our highways, but this will change. Society is being compelled to invest in inferior ways of using the sun, for example skylights light buildings far more effectively than PV panels wired to light bulbs but skylights are ignored. When the state, through their renewable energy portfolio does our shopping for solar energy, it skips what is healthy, inexpensive and available and buys for you, what ever the price, products you would never buy with your own money.
