Solartism
Here in sunny New Mexico our shopping centers have
almost no natural light. The single story buildings are
largely without skylights and windows, like electrically
illuminated above ground caves.
LIGHT BULBS vs SKYLIGHTS
At the same time we are building acres of solar power
plants with expensive photovoltaic panels I’m sure even
their great power is exhausted before they light all the
rows of fluorescent bulbs. It isn’t as if the photovoltaic
panels are wisely chosen because they work at night.
They go off at dark the same time as the more efficient
and less expensive skylights.
Why, if we are so desperate to use the sun don’t we
remember this less expensive and once well known
method of solar lighting by using skylights and windows?
Instead of laws passed making demands on the utilities
lets have the customers use the sun directly and
inexpensively. Customers have the chance and yet don’t
use the sun. Go into Walgreens or Lowes and during the
sunniest weather the lights are on, not a ray of sunlight
entering, do they think their customers don’t like natural
light? It must be a frame of mind, a style, a thought that
modern stores should use modern light bulbs not the old
fashioned sun. There are among the shopping centers
stores that do use skylights, Wal-mart has skylights and
during clear weather with a high sun will turn off the
electric lights. How could we get Wal-mart to boast
about this? Those who choose photovoltaics and light
bulbs might be called Solartists. Like the followers of
Scientism that Fredrick Hayek discussed in his book
The Counterrevolution of Science in the 1950’s. These
are people who abuse scientific terms and have
scientific pretensions but no grasp of the logic or nature
of science. They wish to exploit what they do not
understand.
The Solartists find the expensive photovoltaic panels
wired to light bulbs more truly solar than the more
efficient less expensive skylight. Would they continue
these idiocies on their own buildings? Yes, they do.
Often you see photographs in magazines of buildings,
even factories for photovoltaics where the walls and
roofs are obscured by PV panels. I think their
enthusiasm for photovoltaic panels is always
accompanied by tax credits.
GREEN JOBS
The Solartist is behind the strange definition of green
jobs. These are people working on wind generators or
solar power plants. They are usually shown with hard
hats and safety belts however gentle the roof slopes.
Ethanol is another green product, and pumping ethanol
into your car is green where having lunch is….well just
having lunch. If we called ourselves bio-machines
would every cook and waiter have a green job? The
cooks and waiters pay for the subsidies to build wind
generators and photovoltaic panels. After such
uneconomic projects drain enough money finally
restaurants close as has happened here but no one
connects the loss of these green jobs to the solar
subsidy. This was explained long ago – What is seen
and what is not seen. – by Frederic Bastiat Selected
Essays 1848.
Our lives are already solar. Doctors, nurses, hair
dressers all forgotten by Solartists who are technical and
modern and also mistaken.
PLANNING
State planning fits (I should say interfaces) better with
the mechanical and electrical than the biological or
ecological so we are constantly guided by the planners.
They concentrate on mechanisms and electricity as they
despoil nature, the environment and society. They don’t
see what they do, as if their tires were driving over their
own family and yet they were stepping on the gas
because they can’t hear the screams. We owe this to the
unfounded attraction of the plan, the mistake of wishing
to be part of a machine as if it were our best hope.
Backhoes have replaced much shovel work but this is
not a recommendation for bureaucracy and State
planning. Buy a machine, don’t sell yourself to one.
Anyone who values the ways of previous generations,
their windows, gardens, farms, manners of living is
unworthy.
THE CURTAIN
This curtain to cut us off from our past is so near we trip
on it. Our business started in 1969 and has much of its
history on the before side of solar energy curtain. The
curtain has been woven by The solar electric lobby, their
grants and subsidies, the DOE and now doubtless the
CIA. The curtain separates and showcases uses of the
sun that imitate fossil fuels, it hides old fashioned uses
of the sun however effective. Puzzling over the demise
of the skylight and window and the rise of the Solartists
and their state supported solar electric lobby I have seen
something ominous. The citizen looks for something
other than truth to decide what to think, whom to back.
He seeks a point of view enforced by money, by
television and the press. Establishing itself free of truth
holds out the most promise for an idea. It shows the
favor of a powerful pressure group that can make things
happen. A pea hen looking for a mate wants a strong
one. And that is shown by his dragging around that
ridiculous tail. The Solartists survives because he
makes the same kind of choice. The solar electric lobby
is strong and backs the PV panel and light bulbs.
You can have your sunlight and your truth and beauty
but others look at the power of the utilities, the
manufacturers of heat pumps and other electric devices.
This is what is terrifying about the state. It can have
policies that distort everything, lies can be woven
everywhere, touch everything. Yes, such planned
paradises finally collapse as dishonest arrangements
always do but in the meantime….
THE LEGACY OF 9-11
This is the legacy of 9-11. Common sense viewing of
the collapse of the three towers confirms that preset
explosives not Arab hi-jackers were responsible for 9-11
yet our policy ignores this and is based on what an
influential pressure group chooses. A false flag 9-11
and our mindless energy policy re-enforce each other.
Don’t look for truth, see who has the money. Of course
these distortions can’t last but in the meantime we can
fight some wars for Israel and the Solartists can demand
the sun imitate man’s machines.
